Kalamkari is the earliest and more complex technique of printing on cloth using vegetable dyes and natural source of colors, this technique practiced in the Machilipatnam cluster of Andhra Pradesh. The origin of the Kalamkari is from Kalam or pen and Kari or work. The Kalamkari done here is a mixture of painting and printing. It is well known for its uniqueness and bold traditional motifs embedded with natural colors. Indigo, deep maroon, black, occur, ecru are the key colors.
