These Are The Major Sustainable Trends To Look Out For This Year

by Synjini Nandi

For a few years now, sustainability has been a driving point in all our conversations. Armed with a strong desire to take care of our planet by minimizing textile waste (& the subsequent landfills), people have gradually started shopping consciously and responsibly. From choosing sustainable labels to opting for natural fabrics, dyes, techniques etc. we have certainly come a long way. But what’s next? We have started a list of trends that will further champion this cause and pave the way for a better future.

Scroll down for all the deets.

What’s old is new again

And by this we mean shopping for pre-used, pre-loved and gorgeous vintage finds; not only will you land up with unique, one of the kind pieces to update your closet with, but is also a great for people who are serious shopaholics. The upside: buying pre-worn items inherently cuts down on the damage and minimises material waste, plastic production, water waste etc. Though this concept isn’t entirely new, it will certainly pick up this year. No wonder the pre-loved luxury market has also grown exponentially in the last few months as well.

Recycle

Instead of throwing that dress away that you just got last year, how about taking it to a store that will help you recycle it instead? Luckily a host of brands out there have made this process easier by allowing you to drop off your old clothes in return for some incentives. Another genius way to recycle is to sell your pre-worn clothes online so that someone else gets the chance to enjoy them as much as you did.

Read That Tag

Yes we have certainly become more mindful of the fabrics we opt for, but do we still read the tags properly? This year, we are normalizing reading garment tags and asking questions about where that piece of clothing is coming from; are the materials ethically sourced? Is vegan leather really legitimitate or is it just plastic? Doing due diligence before adding to cart will go a long way in helping us make the correct choices.

The Rise Of The Capsule Wardrobe

If there’s one thing that the pandemic has taught us: it’s that we really don’t need to shop for a new dress every week. A few basic buys can be easily mixed and matched to create new looks that can be worn almost everywhere. Taking a leaf out of the pandemic handbook, it’s time we invest in high quality multi-tasking pieces that will not leave you with a closet full of nothing to wear.

Digital Fashion

The one trend that has certainly taken the industry by storm and is here to stay is the increase in digital fashion; think digital fashion shows, exhibitions, 3D fashion designs etc. that will drastically change the way we look at fashion. Moreover, these if executed in the right manner can be infinitely more sustainable as they will help cut down on electricity consumption, solve the issue of waste disposal, unpaid labour etc.
