The top trends from Lakmé Fashion Week summer/resort 2019

by Editors

Five days, over 60 designers and countless trends. We scoured the runways at Lakmé Fashion Week summer/resort 2019 to curate a cheatsheet that we’d suggest you keep handy. From black in all its iterations to ruffles (little or lots), these are the top trends of the season.

Black
Who says black should take a backseat for the summer? Spotted stepping over to the dark side were designers Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra (the floor-sweeping gown seen on showstopper Kareen Kapoor Khan is poised to be a red-carpet staple), Shehla Khan with her midnight lehengas and Raghavendra Rathore who sent out a slew of meticulously embellished kurta-cum-jackets in the hue.

Ruffles
It’s safe to say the Boomerang-friendly detail is staging a comeback. If you’re not ready to commit from top to toe, start with a trimming – at Sukriti & Aakriti, traditional borders were swapped for subtle ruffles. For the sartorially brave at heart, we’d recommend going all out with a Gauri & Nainika red and white rendition or even Anushree Reddy’s cascading, lime green sari.

Florals
Let’s face it, nothing says summer quite like florals. The season’s picks ranged from painterly at Anita Dongre to high-shine at Payal Singhal and outsized at Rohit Bal. And it didn’t stop at traditional lehengas and blouses, designer Kanika Goyal delivered a fresh spin on pared-down wardrobe basics with monochrome flowers on a neon backdrop.

Sheer
The see-through detail was doted on by designers both emerging and established. While for husband-and-wife duo Sonam and Paras Modi, it came in the form of gossamer layers, for Shriya Som it made its way on to dresses and diaphanous cover-ups. Mishru’s take on the transparent trend saw saris, dupattas and second-skin sleeves finished with frost and feathers.

Print clash
Unlikely partnerships are the best kind. Case in point: The print partners that reigned on the runway. Saksha & Kinni teamed larger-than-life leopard with paisley and checks, Péro paired stripes and squares and Tahweave brought together floral and chevron. The only rule here is that there are no rules.
