Nykaa Fashion Editors Talk About Women Who Have Inspired Their Sense Of Style

by Shivani Chhabra

Fashion is what you see, style is what you imbibe. Simply put, style is a culmination of—sartorial choices reflective of your personality, aesthetics that compliment your vibe, and trends tweaked to your comfort. Apart from who we are, our sense of style is also an expression of our surroundings, and the people who bring it to life. It is from these people we admire so much, that more often than not, we tend to pick up fashion nuances—unknowingly, and sometimes on purpose, just to embrace a part of them as truly ours.

As an ode to these people-turned-style icons in our lives, this International Women’s Day, our editors are talking about the ladies they have taken fashion-inspiration from.

I think the trend of Indigo came in a whirlwind and swept everyone off their feet. But it was one of my school teachers who made me fall in love with Indigo Dabu prints. She had white pixie cut hair that clashed with her smart cotton Dabu saris. The prints somehow enhanced her entire aura, her posture, her smile. I remember buying Indigo hued Dabu printed fabrics and at one point my entire wardrobe looked the same. I still love chic, yet earthy Dabu dresses and kurtas!

Easy. My fashion inspiration has always been Hailey Bieber. I just really enjoy her outfit choices, especially when she pairs oversized blazers with a basic pair of denims and sneakers. I love a good clash, and Bieber just validates that for me. Also, she has mastered the art of putting together very strong off-duty athleisure looks which I admire (and most often take inspiration from). I mean, she makes gold hoops, white sneakers and sweatpants look so good even at the grocery store. C’mon, right?

Quite frankly, it was never one woman who inspired my sense of style. I remember taking style cues from multiple women in my life; be it my grandma’s love for pretty jewels or my mom’s silk saris that she would pair with her favourite pair of heels. I am a keen observer and tend to pick up small details from everyone around me. I feel every woman out there has a very distinct sense of style and there is so much to get inspired from.

I remember finding her easy-breezy sense of style infectious (until I had imbibed it subconsciously, too); my ex-manager, Somya Abrol, aced the art of dressing up effortlessly. Clad in traditional, roomie maxi dresses accentuated with unique and vintage jewellery, she was a picture of poise, style, and comfort. Adding to her quintessential style was the unapologetic choice of kicks she more often than not punctuated her looks with. Long before the world hopped onto the sneaker bandwagon, Somya had been championing it. Needless to say, today, my go-to outfit is a maxi dress, elevated with jewellery and sneakers I can run the world in!

I turn to Olivia Culpo everytime I’m looking for some #glamspo. While her style is not very edgy, she’s not afraid to experiment with new trends. From her off-duty denims, matching sets, ruffled dresses to tailored joggers, she’s got that cool girl look on lock. A lesson I’ve learnt? Pick versatile pieces that can work anywhere, anytime!
