Independence Day Edit: Freedom From Fashion Stereotypes

by Aarohi Roy

Girls wear pink, boys wear blue. Crop tops and cut-out styles are meant for skinny women. Dusky girls shouldn’t wear bright colors or neons. Plus size women should cover up their arms and thighs. Stereotypes. Prejudices. Labels and typecasts. We’ve all heard them, we’ve all unwillingly followed them to ‘fit in’.
But if covid taught us anything, its that life is too short to submit to stereotypes. This Independence Day, we’re debunking fashion myths, changing rules, and bending our wardrobes to fit us rather than the society. Gather up and say out loud: We will wear what we want!
Rainbows are for all!
We refuse to typecast colors to genders and other stereotypes. ALL colors are henceforth neutral. Pink looks dashing on men, blue makes women look hot and every color on the spectrum is open to all. Wearing rainbow colours isn’t a taboo, it’s just a declaration of love.

Curvy is hot and so is skinny & slender.
Your shape doesn’t restrict you. We love curvaceous women in figure hugging little black dresses. We also love skinny jeans and bralettes on slender beauties. Fashion is too glamorous for hate and your bodies too gorgeous to hide. Wear what makes YOU feel beautiful and forget the rest.

Bold prints are for loud girls and *dramatically* EVERYBODY else.
Yes, they can be a statement, or prints can just be pretty. You can be loud, you can be cute, you can be earth-friendly, or you can be a boss girl. Prints don’t define you, it’s the other way round! The same ‘boldly’ printed dress can look and mean different on different people.

‘Cross-dressing’ is a term of the past.
Clothes cannot change your gender. So, ditch these orthodox fixations and wear the clothes you are comfortable in. The lines between genders are getting blurry for good, and we love that fashion is the biggest supporter of debunking these age-old clichés. Dresses are for all. Suits are for all. Jewelry is for all. Period.

Clothes define character or character defines clothes?
If you believe in pigeon-holes like ‘short dresses are inappropriate’ or ‘heels are formal’, your mind is restricted. Your personality affects the clothes you wear – a short dress can be cutesy and fun, flats can be as formal as heels, athleisure can be turned into casual evening outfits and cut-out, sexy dresses can be completely appropriate!
