Remember ‘Love You Zindagi’s Shahrukh Khan? Every time I tell people that my father’s a psychologist, they immediately imagine my dad in denim shirts and joggers – like in the movie. And while his personality is way cooler that of Sharukh’s, my dad’s wardrobe unfortunately resembles an Indian Railways Ticket Collector instead!
Are all fathers still stuck in the 70s and 80s fashion with high-waisted pleated trousers and boring solid tucked-in shirts? Even when my dad decides to go casual, he sticks to dull polo t-shirts with no bright colours nor any contrast.
I took it upon myself to subtly style his look. Here are 7 easy ways I modified my dad’s wardrobe so he would look as cool as he truly is!
1 The Solid T-shirt Stack
Most men like it classic and need a bunch of t-shirts they can wear at any time. The trick lies in two things: the neckline & the size! Most men look great in snug v-necks, but check what suits your father. And most dads end up wearing oversized t-shirts that don’t do justice to their bodies.
2 The Denim Staples
If your dad always says, ‘I don’t need more jeans’, you must introduce them to mid-waisted ankle length denims that work perfectly as work pants. Denims are the bridge between comfort and style, and you should be mindful about the fit and colour for your dad.
3 The Bomber Jacket
Jackets transform men’s looks instantly. Think of Jeff Goldblum – one of the coolest dads of Hollywood, he’s always donning a good jacket. And while leather jackets or blazers are not always suitable – we recommend a solid bomber jacket.
4 The Classy and Solid Kurtas
Men look dashing in solid kurtas, especially in white ones, period. A perfectly fitting, mandarin collared kurta with its sleeves folded up to the sleeves is a great look for your dad. Pair the kurta with a churidar, jeans, chinos or even traditional pajamas.
5 The Casual Shirts
Think: printed shirts that can be paired with casual cotton pants or shorts. These can be transitioned from tucked-in semi-formals to brunch style front-open casual shirts worn over t-shirts. You can play with colours, sleeve lengths and prints. Every dad needs at least 2-3 styles in their wardrobe.
6 The Quirky Add-ons
A swankier belt or a pair of colourful socks make all the difference in their workwear. If your father wears suits or even blazers to work, you can think of unusual cufflinks or pocket squares. Another classic addition to your dad’s look can be a pair of large framed square glasses.
7 The Quintessential Loafers
Loafers are like the holy grail of footwear for men. They’re casual, spunky and yet can be worn to work. Get a lean and narrow fit pair that would be easy to slip into and in a colour that goes with just about everything. Stick to browns, blacks and tans.
