I’m A Fashion Editor And Here’s How I Have Built My Summer Closet

by Lakshmi Nayar

According to me, the foundation of a strong summer wardrobe must ideally include breathable, comfortable pieces that are simple but don’t lack personality. I love a good set of versatile basics that I can play around with and can be partnered with, well—almost anything. From oversized overshirts and white sneakers to boyfriend jeans and midi skirts, here’s how I’ve personally built my wardrobe for warmer days.

BOYFRIEND JEANS

You know you’ve found the perfect pair of boyfriend jeans when you feel both relaxed and portable in them. I absolutely love a pair of boxy, distressed denims with a touch of masculinity. I prefer pairing them with a dressed-up blouse and pointed pumps, especially for impromptu dinner dates with the girls. On other days, I’d wear them an old tee and flip flops even if it means just lounging around at home.

WHITE T-SHIRT

Okay, besides having a rich, historic birth, there’s nothing more satisfying than wearing a crisp, classic white-shirt, especially during these uncertain times. It’s an instant mood lifter for me. I always make sure I have a couple of them with slight variations that I keep on rotation (most of them with sleeves that are relaxed and long). I wear mine with everything from my sweats or yoga pants to my cotton skirts with a pair of gold hoops.

PLEATED MIDI SKIRT

I love collecting pleated midi skirts from different homegrown labels that I pull out during the summer. I like how these knee-length pieces just instantly elevate my style. I wear them mostly with poplin shirts, tanned loafers during the day and maybe thrown on a blazer and a sleek, low bun if I plan to step out for a quick bite.

WHITE SNEAKERS

It goes without saying that a pair of white sneakers have officially become a timeless, off-duty classic. At this point, it’s almost impossible to scroll through Instagram and not spot a pair worn by —well, everyone. The one thing that I’ve learnt is that if you look after them well, they will work hard for you and your wardrobe, forever. I wear them for both busy days and lazy weekends. I’m obsessed with them.

THE OVERSIZED OVERSHIRT

With the lockdown and WFH way of life, I have gravitated towards oversized overshirts. I lost count of the number of times I’ve thrown on a baggy shirt five minute before a zoom meeting. It always takes the pressure off for impromptu meetings, helping me look vaguely put-together in second. The styling possibilities are infinite, to be honest. I wear it over my loungewear, summer dress or even tie it into a cute crop top with a pair of mom jeans.
