A celebrity stylist’s ultimate guide to curvy girl dressing

by Drishti Mistry

Let’s face it! The name Aastha Sharma needs no introduction – she’s easily one of the most recognizable faces among the celebrity styling scene considering her client roster reads like the opening credits of a blockbuster Bollywood multi-starrer. Celebrities spanning Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Kajol, Kiara Advani, Disha Patani, Bhumi Pednekar and many others have her to thank for some of their most iconic looks. So, when we thought of creating the ultimate dressing guide for all you curvy girls, she was just the name  we had to reach out to! We got her to share her dos and don’ts, her inspirations and even her top picks from the website! Scroll down to find out what they are!

On her dos…

– Accept your body the way it is – love it and be open to trying new styles and silhouettes. Fall in love with dressing up. We are living in a time where one has so many options available for women in all shapes and sizes. Designers and brands are no longer only focusing on model sizes.

– Understand your body type- study it, give it time. Changing your style is always a process & not an overnight skill you’ll learn. Be confident with your body and your skin tone.

–  Invest in some good quality inner wear and body shapers that fit and shape you well. It makes such a huge difference in the way your clothes will fall on your body.

– The trial and error theory applies here too! Try different silhouettes and find your right fit. Spend time understanding what works for your body type and what doesn’t.

– Always opt for quality fabrics and clean fits. Steer clear of bulky fabric as they will only make you look heavier.

– Count on colours that enhance your skin tone and make you happy. Wear bold colours and prints but mix them with solids. For example if you are styling a bright printed shirt, team it with a solid and sleek skirt or a pair of pencil trousers.

On her don’ts…

–  Keep baggy and bulky outfits at bay – they are unflattering and make you look larger than your actual size.

–  Don’t shy away from experimenting with colours and prints. Mix them up with solids to balance the look.

– Don’t blindly follow trends- there is a lot of information out there, you need to edit what works best for your body type.

– Avoid clothing with spillage or fabrics like nylon that will stick to your body. Good quality fabrics and fits are a must.

– Don’t get stuck in a style rut with just one silhouette, every once in a while try something new and keep your looks from getting predictable!

On silhouettes that flatter every curvy girl…

Mid-waist skirts and trousers never disappoint – they always work. Turn to tapered waistlines that accentuate the narrowness of the waist and draw the eye away from your problem areas. Experiment with necklines – if you are top heavy, go for deeper and open necklines. Have fun with the lengths of your skirts and dresses, you don’t always have to go long – this of course is keeping your comfort in mind.

On her plus-size pinups…

There are so many cool curvy women who I know and I have worked with that I admire. But the one whose style I follow the most is Ashley Graham’s – she is such an inspiration!
