5 movies with famous costume designers

by Aakriti Patni

We’ve been bitten by the film bug during this lockdown. It comes as no surprise for us as when we easily burn through our watch lists, consuming great drama. While under normal circumstances, binge-watching classics and new fiction while curled up on the couch would get monotonous quite quickly, it’s merely the way of life right now. And thankfully for us fashion enthusiasts, there is a sea of style-conscious films. Below you’ll find five of our favourite films with a focus on famous designers.

Hubert de Givenchy for Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961)

One of the chicest moments from fictional fashion history: the iconic little black dress from Breakfast At Tiffany’s. Designed by Hubert de Givenchy for Audrey Hepburn, we saw the actress define the ultimate “Parisian” look as she wore her dress with opera gloves in the same colour and a string of pearls as she delicately nibbled on her croissant and coffee.

Yves Saint-Laurent for Belle de Jour (1967)

As Catherine Deneuve’s character shifts from playing a bourgeois young woman to a high-class prostitute, so do her many outfits, all courtesy of Frech designer, Yves Saint-Laurent. From the characteristic YSL double-breasted jackets to his sharp collared dresses, Deneuve’s costumes remain stylish as ever today.

Manolo Blahnik for Marie Antoinette (2006)

Director Sofia Coppola took to the finer details of history with determination. It’s no wonder then, that Spanish fashion designer, Manolo Blahnik was roped in for recreating the extravaganza of Marie Antoinette through shoes for this movie. There’s even an entire scene dedicated to showcasing the tasselled mules and ruffled pumps of the whimsical leading character.

Miuccia Prada for The Great Gatsby (2013)

Who but Miuccia Prada could recreate the 1920s ensuring to capture the sophistication and glamour of those times? The costume team dipped into the fashion archives of Prada and Miu Miu for inspiration, bringing to the forefront sequins, silks and fur.

Tom Ford for James Bond: Spectre (2015)

We have Tom Ford to thank for Daniel Craig being dressed in sleek suits and bomber jackets. The American fashion designer is known for creating impeccably tailored suits, and for the character of James Bond, there couldn’t be a better fit.
